A NEW APPROACH TO TREATING PCOS, OHSS AND OTHER HORMONAL ISSUES

Dig into the biomedicine to get a full picture of what is happening in order to shape your TCM diagnosis and treatment

Hasn’t this subject been done to death already?

My starting point in writing this course was to think about what I needed as a practitioner with 20 years of experience. I needed to move beyond the basics and the standard textbooks. What I needed were some new clinical tools that I could use to boost my results and understand why, in some cases, what I was doing from a purely TCM point of view was just not working.

Many years ago, my clients were coming in with blood tests that were no use to me beyond telling me that the client did indeed have PCOS, and those who had to have IVF were often going through OHSS without me understanding enough about what I could do to alleviate or prevent their discomfort.

Then in 2007 I spend a year working in the private practice of the two consultants who ran the largest public IVF unit in the UK and integrating acupuncture into that unit. I was able to have ‘behind the scenes’ access to egg collections, to sperm analysis, and to the inner workings of decision-making around medication and embryology choices.

As part of this experience, I had, for the first time, access to the results of the regular blood tests given to clients during their cycles and I could see what changes there were in their blood tests the days after I had given them acupuncture. Similarly, when working with my endometriosis clients I was able to see monthly blood testing and I began to see a pattern between my treatment choices and their hormonal responses.

These experiences sent me down a path of research and experimentation which culminated in me realising that I could translate the biomedicine into my innate TCM language and diagnostic system in order to refine my TCM diagnostic choices and the results I could expect to get. These days, the elements of PCOS I used to struggle with are no longer an issue. I also now know enough about the biomedicine to be able to talk to my clients knowledgeably and with authority about their experience, helping to guide them through the issues that having PCOS, and particularly having IVF with PCOS, can throw up.

At the end of this course, practitioners should be able to read and understand all the hormonal and metabolic testing I discuss, and be able to translate that into useful, clinically applicable TCM diagnostic and treatment patterns. My overall aim in this course is to make your practice more effective and improve your client outcomes, the feedback I’ve received from those who have taken the course demonstrates that this is exactly what is happening.
